I have worked in the water treatment industry for over 20 years, and through my career, I have seen a lot of incorrect and misleading information published and distributed regarding correct water treatment methods, function, and application.  Here I try to explain how a water softener works, and attempt to clear up some common misconceptions.  From time-to-time I'll add to this site, with more reviews and discussion about other water treatment methods, like reverse osmosis, ultraviolet sterilization, chemical injection, pH neutralization, and common water filtering techniques.
